Organisation Profile

In 2003 a Dutch patient organisation was established for GIST patients. This group flourished and grew steadily, reaching over 450 members in 2016, including Dutch speaking patients in Belgium. In 2012 a patient organisation was created for all other sarcoma patients. This group faced severe challenges because of the diversity of sarcoma types and difficulties to attract funding. In 2016 it was decided to join forces and extend the scope of the existing and well established GIST patient organisation in order to cover all sarcoma types. The rationale was that GIST is also a sarcoma, the GIST organisation was already well embedded in the national and international oncology networks and has access to funding. Thus, as of January 1, 2017 the GIST patient organisation became the Sarcoma Patient Platform. An existing group of chordoma patients, associated with the Chordoma Foundation Europe, joined the Sarcoma Patient Platform.

Our aim

Our aim is to contribute to the quality of life of sarcoma patients. This includes physical, emotional as well as social aspects of well-being.

• We provide up-to-date information on GIST and other sarcomas through our website as well as printed material.
• We support patients, organise meetings and provide closed discussion forums on internet.
• We maintain close relationships with expert centers for treatment of GIST and other sarcomas and participate in research agenda setting and development of treatment pathways.

Our network

• We are a member of NFK, the Dutch Federation of Cancer Patient Organisations.
• We closely collaborate with other cancer patient organisations on non-tumor-specific issues relating to cancer patients.
• We collaborate in international networks such as SPAEN, GIST Support International, Life Raft Group and ECPC.

Organisatie profiel

In 2003 werd de Contactgroep GIST opgericht voor patiënten met een gastro intestinale stroma tumor. Deze groep ontwikkelde zich voorspoedig tot een patiëntenorganisatie met 450 leden (stand 2016), inclusief Nederlandstalige patiënten in België. Voor de overige sarcoom patiënten werd in 2012 de Stichting Sarcoma opgericht. Voor deze groep was het moeilijk zich te ontwikkelen, gezien o.a. de grote diversiteit aan tumor typen. Ook was het moeilijk om toegang tot financiering te krijgen. In 2016 werd besloten om de krachten tussen deze organisaties te bundelen. GIST is ook een sarcoom, de Contactgroep GIST had al een goede samenwerking met de gespecialiseerde sarcoma behandelcentra en met andere kankerpatiëntenorganisaties in binnen- en buitenland. Op 1 januari 2017 is de doelstelling van de Contactgroep GIST verbreed tot alle typen sarcoom en de naam gewijzigd in Patiëntenplatform Sarcomen. Een al bestaande groep vrijwilligers voor chordoma patiënten di verbonden is met de Chordoma Foundation Europe heeft zich ook bij het nieuwe platform aangesloten.

Onze doelstelling

De missie van het Patiëntenplatform Sarcomen is het bevorderen van de kwaliteit van leven van mensen met een sarcoom. Met kwaliteit van leven bedoelen we zóveel fysiek, mentaal en sociaal welbevinden als met de ziekte mogelijk is.  

• Via onze website en via gedrukte media geven wij actuele informatie over de diverse typen sarcoom.
• Wij ondersteunen patiënten, organiseren contactdagen en onderling contact via een besloten internet forum.
• Wij onderhouden nauwe contacten met de gespecialiseerde behandelcentra voor de verschillende typen sarcoom en participeren in het opstellen van onderzoeks agenda’s en het ontwikkelen van zorgpaden.

 
Ons netwerk

• Het Patiëntenplatform Sarcomen is lid van NFK, de Nederlandse Federatie van Kankerpatiënten organisaties.
• Wij werken nauw samen met andere kankerpatiënten organisaties op niet-tumor-specifieke onderwerpen.
• Internationaal werken we samen met netwerken zoals SPAEN, GIST Support International, Life Raft Group, Chordoma Foundation en ECPC.
